Within the representational systems, there is a lead and primary system. The lead system is accessed instinctively and may not reflect the thinking pattern of the person. For example, when asked a question, a person may instinctively look to Auditory digital as they are repeating the question to themselves in their head before responding. They may then move to their Primary Representational System to then create a picture (should their Primary System be Visual).

The primary system is that which is preferred in communication (i.e. a predominantly Visual person) and may be different from the lead system. When building rapport, matching rep systems proves very powerful. Reflected in the concept of pacing and leading, after having matched another's rep system, one may lead another to a preferred rep system.

Representational System – pertains to the five senses including Visual as seeing, Auditory as hearing, Kinesthetic as feeling and touching, Olfactory as smelling, Gustatory as tasting and Auditory Digital is internal self-talk. It is called, "Representational" because it is the way your brain codes and represents your communications, memories and ideas inside to make sense of your world. It's the only six things you can do in your mind.

Preferred or Primary Representational System – is your most favoured way of expressing yourself, almost habitually using specific words that fall into one of the four representational systems such as; 'Visual, Auditory, Kinesthetic' or 'Auditory Digital'.

Lead Representational System – the eye-pattern system you use in order to first search for stored information to find that information; either visual, auditory, kinesthetic or auditory digital.
